How are points calculated on the leaderboard?

The leaderboard points are calculated using a combination of base points and bonus points, designed to reward both effort and progress in a fun and encouraging way.

While we don’t share the full formula publicly - this helps us keep the system adaptable and ensure it stays fair for all readers.
Here's a general breakdown of how the points are calculated.

Base points are mainly influenced by two things:
  1. How long your child reads
  2. How accurately they read the words aloud
This helps us recognise and reward focused, meaningful reading.

Bonus points are then added to encourage positive reading habits and development. For example:
  1. A bonus for your first read of the day, to promote daily practice
  2. A bonus for tackling a more challenging book for the first time, to support growth and confidence
There are also occasional surprise bonuses to reward curiosity, exploration, and consistency - whether it’s completing a streak, or finishing a book that’s outside their usual comfort zone.
These hidden rewards help nurture problem-solving skills and keep children engaged and motivated.
